I love his strat tone. It's the tone in my head. I watched a rig rundown of him and he uses his signature Free The Tone SOV for his overdrive sound. I cant spend 270 on a pedal right now. What will get me that same tone but for around 100-130 bucks?

matt sounds like matt, because of the way he touches the guitar. you can find clips of him all kinds of gear and he always sounds the same...in a good way.

if you need to add an od to your sound on the cheap (by tgp standards), i recommend the dunlop modified od. and practice matt's stuff a lot.

Strat, some kind of tubescreamer and a clean Fender amp will get you in the ballpark.

The SOV is a Dumble type OD. Maybe look for a used Simble. Matt also uses a Klon or Jan Ray for light OD. For that you could get an EH Soul Food.

Look for a Providence SOV-2. I've seen used ones for $120. or so. Not exactly like the one Matt uses but close enough. Good sounding pedal.

Sure you can get really close with strat - stampede -short delay - fender blackface amp.
I have a FTT sov 2 in pedalboard. it's great.
Also have a stampede, pretty ok substitute.

Free the Tone Red Jasper. It is one of their standard version pedals that sell for cheaper and can be found used for around $175-$200. It is every bit as good as the SOV-2, yet has less maximum gain.

I have a MS SOV MS-2V and it's a fantastic pedal. Are there many on the used market you could look for?
