Complete recording noob so please pardon my ignorance. I have an Mbox 2 with Protools LE, starter pack and all sorts of plug-ins that someone gave me. Protools is way more complicated than I need at the moment and I'm currently cutting my teeth with Garageband. I've been using a friends Duet as the interface (which is a very cool and simple device). I've now got to give it back.

Can I use the MBox 2 as the interface for Garageband and not install Protools or does Digidesign make it all work as one. I could probably answer this question by simply trying to install the MBox and drivers, etc. but thought I'd save some hassle if anyone knows the answer. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you can use the mbox with garageband. You can use most interfaces with garageband. But keep in mind you can't use pro tools without your mbox (or another digi interface).
