I couldn't find the answer readily on Wikipedia, so I'm asking here: where does this phrase originate? It seems to have been the Bar-Kays. Is that right?

"Mean Mistreater" is Muddy Waters song, if I remember correctly, written in the 50's.

    Thanks, Dana O.

Man, I played that GFR version for hours on end, back when I was a wee tot, trying to figure out all of Mark's nuances.

Thanks! It seemed a little too rootsy to be GFR.

I don't think the GFR song is the same song...not a blues.
Not saying I didn't like it in 8th grade.

I mentioned GFR because that was the overwhelmingly popular Google result.

can't think of the song (hell, might even be a line in 'Dust My Broom'?), but i know Elmore James used it to describe a woman in one of his tunes.

    similar to "she's a no-good doney", he says "she's a mean mistreater".

i'll see if i can find it. the Muddy Waters tune is from '59, so i'd imagine Elmore James (and a thousand others, it was probably a relatively popular term in the day) used it before then.

i only know this because the term always jumped out at me, i love the way Elmore James used it. it's been stuck in my head since i first heard it.
