I've been trying to figure this out for a while but no one I ask has known the answer and internet searches don't turn anything up.

This past season all the NFL coaches seemed to have a symbol on the left shoulder of their jackets. I saw something similar on some college coaches. Here's a web picture of Mike Tomlin wearing it. What is the significance?

The Nike swoosh is obvious but what about the rest? It looks like someone tied a tampon to a billy club and fired a bullet at it.

It's a zipper pull, you seem to be over thinking this.

I did see a reference to a left shoulder "media pocket" somewhere. I guess that could be it. It seemed like the zipper pulls were always at the same angle so I assumed it was part of a design, not something hanging off a zipper.

I seem to be. I guess they use the same design across the NFL and a slightly different design for the NCAA. What's the function of the minus sign?

Thanks guys. There are so many things being sewed and painted and ironed onto NFL stuff these days I jumped to seeing it as a cryptic symbol.

    It means:

Last year, Nike paid $1.1 billion to clothe the NFL for the next five years. If it goes well, some analysts estimate it could mean half a billion in revenue for each of those five years.

Good work OP. You've discovered the hidden pocket on Mike Tomlin's shoulder.
