Yes, it is a great loss. I had the pleasure of playing and hanging a bit with Mel.
RIP, my friend.

Mel was my wife's uncle. I have known him for nearly 40 years. During the 70s and 80s he and Angel would hang out at our house for weeks at a time. I learned a lot about playing guitar from Mel. Most recently I talked with him on a fairly regular basis and we would jam together over the cell phone. Mel was a great guitar and keyboard player and a fantastic human being. http://www.melbrownblues.com/

He will be missed. The world of music has lost a giant.

I saw Mel with Bobby Blue Bland (Wayne Bennett on the other guitar!) open for BB King when I was 16. I was knocked out! Mel was the GROOVE!

RIP Mel.

Mel's extended residence at Antone's in the 80's produced many unforgettable musical moments.

Sad to hear of his passing. RIP.

I met Mel & Sam Meyers in Jackson Mississippi, and told em about how Hip Austin was, Mel moved there and Sam was Hooked up with Anson and the rest is History.
Both these Cats were awesome, They opened for Us (I was in the Marcia Ball band, this must have been 1981 or 82.) We should have opened for those 2 cats.
Mel played some great B3 and guitar.

There is a good DVD on Electro-Fi about Mel. I pull it out every few months to watch. A very tasty player.
