What Melvin Sparks CD's do you recommend, either as a leader or sideman?
If you can hold for a second, one of the drummers in my Band was Melvin Sparks Drummer for the last part of Melvin's career before Melvin passed, and now keeps a band going called "Sparkplug - The music of Melvin Sparks" which contains the Drummer, Organ player and Percussionist from Melvins touring band and they use a rotating cast of hot guitarists to pay tribute to a very influential, awesome but under-appreciated musician!
I will get his recommendations for you, he would know!
In the meantime:
Eulogy my friend/drummer wrote about Melvin:
Here are the reccomendations from Bill Carbone (Drummer Melvin Sparks Band and Sparkplug):
As a Sideman:
"Black Talk" by Charles Earland,
"The Scorpion, Live at the Cadillac Club" by Lou Donaldson;
Turning Point and Think by Lonnie Smith
