Mini-Trim Pot: How to tell setting?

If the top of the adjustment screw "+" on a mini-trim pot is not marked, how can you tell the setting?

Meaning, as in the example above ("+"), is the trim pot set at 12 o'clock? or 3 o'clock? or 6 o'clock? or 9 o'clock?

it is usually hard to tell, but when I have wondered the same thing, I usually take note of where it is, then turn it the whole way each direction to tell its range and what effect it has, then find the sweet spot.
