Missing countor body decal on a 1983 strat

    It was the mid-late 1960s - around 1968 when Fender went to the larger black decals. So the USA and Custom Shop reissues have the decals over the finish to be accurate for models recreating things before 1969. When Fender had AVRIs of the '69 Tele Thinline, '72 Tele Thinline, '72 Tele Custom and 70s Strat they had the decals under the finish to be year-accurate.

    The Clapton Strat also has the "Fender Stratocaster" decal over the finish (but serial number decal is under the finish, and I think the signature decal is also), and Fender kept using decals over the finish on the American Originals even though they aren't "year accurate" any more.
