Modulation for Psychedelic Rock

I'm looking for some kind of modulation for a psych-punk band. My problem is I don't want to go wah (the other guitar sort of owns wah in our band) and I'm not a fan of whoosh-whoosh effects (phase, flange, vibe). I play lots of lead, fwiw.

My chain goes like this: Strat >> Ge Fuzz Face >> Treble Booster >> EQ >> Vol (tuner) >> Delay.

Maybe some kind of whacky octave? A Sitar-ish sound? I prefer it to have a random, wild quality that you have ride a bit. Let me know what you got.

^ Love that pedal, I recommend it as well.

I don't really know what else to recommend since you've limited your modulation options, but here are a few suggestions that you may or may not like...

Catalinbread Heliotrope
EQD Hummingbird
EQD Organizer
EQD Rainbow Machine (as random as it gets)
EQD Sea Machine (trippy, unusal chorus sounds, not to mention it self oscillates)
Z.VEX Sonar Tremolo

And just putting it out there that many psychadelic-rock bands used phasers, vibes and what not.

Ring mods are fun...
Maybe a low-fi bitcrushing fuzz from Devi Ever or Dwarfcraft?

Are we there yet?

You looking for something for single note lines, chords or what? Either way sounds like you might like a phaser, you may just need to set it differently than you're used to. IME something more like a Small Stone works better than something like a Phase 90.

Only other thing I could think of is some kind of ring mod.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Alright, I guess I have to move off of my anti-phaser stance and open my mind. I like the POG/Organizer suggestions.

So what are your favorite ring mods?

I have lots of stuff to look up, but keep those suggestions coming. :)

You might also like the EHX Ravish Sitar.

I play psychedelic rock as well, I've used those pedals a LOT :

- Yamaha UD Stomp => This one is unreal... Delays, phasers, chorus, reverbs, basically any type of modulation is available...
- Zvex Lo-Fi Loop Junky => This looper can get very trippy.
- Digitech Space Station => Etheral sounds, psychedelic madness.
- Electro Harmonix Superego => Use this with the Zvex, put some reverb, delays, and a fuzz !

We move to quick for me to use a looper, but the Lo-Fi Loop Junky sure is cool. The UD Stomp and Space Station look great too, but out of my price range.

Man, I love the EHX Ravish but I think that might get me kicked out of the band, hehehe. I could seriously could spend hours with that. The EHX Super Ego looks great. Even better is the Micro Synth, but it's huge. I'm afraid to drop so much coin on an EHX pedal. Maybe I can find one of these cheap and take the risk.

I really like the Mojo Hand 443 and Nebula IV and their prices are much more in line with my poor ass finances. (The Nebula IV is a phaser. See? I'm growing.) The Totally Wycked Audio Little Dipper envelope filter is awesome, but there are none anywhere in stock nor are there used ones floating around. And it's spendy. Cool, but it's spendy.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Any other ideas?

How about a Trem that does a hard chop (square wave)? With the depth maxed, speed high and another mod or time effect running after it you can get some cool sounds.

I think you go the glitchy fuzz route (wolf computer\devietc) or the shimmer reverb route (blue sky, eventide, verbzilla\m5\m9, etc)

Sounds like you need an envelope filter like the Three Leaf Proton pedal. Which is a clone of the old MuTron. Put it before your germ fuzz, and it'll blow your mind with some delay!

...I really like the Mojo Hand 443...

I've got a mint 442 for sale. $115 shipped and paypaled. The name was ToneFactor before Mojo Hand. Same unit.

EHX Micro-Synth. Way fun for crazy lead stuff, can also use as stand alone filter or octave depending on your settings.

Thanks again everyone. Wow, the Blackout Effectors Whetstone Phaser is awesome! I really dig the Drybell Vibe Machine, too.

I think I may be saving up for a EHX Micro-Synth, though. That thing sounds great. I just have to track down a used one and a bullet proof carrying case for it as it's as big as the rest of my board.
