I have about the cheapest pair of powered monitors you can buy, they sound alright for my recording purposes, but I would like to use my monitors for actual playback outside of recording. They just aren't loud enough or have enough lows.
Would it be wise to snag a bigger pair for these purposes or go another route for playbacl entertainment purposes?

Your monitors are arguably the most critical link in the recording chain. I would go for something nice like Yamaha HS80Ms.

    Something under $400?

The next step down is the Yamaha HS50M. A pair can be had for $400. You could add the matching sub down the road and really have something with those.

It looks like you could get a pair of Event Reference 6s for about $400. I've not heard them, but I've liked the Event stuff I have heard.
