He was the best guitarist Prince had in his band.

Jesse Johnson is great. His solo records are really great. He started doing typical 80s electronic funk stuff, but each album has gotten blusier since then. I've read that Prince discovered EMG's because of him, but this seems unlikely. Pics of Jesse don't show him playing EMG's (on a pink G&L Invader!) until the the late 80's but Prince had em in 83..

Interesting story: In 85 (??) Jesse left the Time and Prince was pissed. One day while talking about his solo album, Jesse mentioned the name of his debut solo album was gonna be "Shockadelica". In a total dick move, Prince went in the studio, recorded a song, called it Shockadelica, and released it a week or so before Jesse put his record out, just to make it look like Jesse copied him.

impressive guitarist, plays some funky stuff but can really cut loose when the situation calls for it. Sadly, that didn't happen much in The Time (AKA THe Original 7ven).

I think I'm most impressed by his ability to play super in-the-pocket rythmes while simultaneously excuting those demanding dance steps!

And Prince's tune is a killer song, too. Brutal. ("She won't let U play your guitar..." *raaaangh!*)

By the way, Jesse left the Original 7 (i.e., the renewed classic Time lineup) a few weeks ago. Sigh.

yeah I had heard that he left. What are they going to call the band now, "The Original 6, +1"?

The new album is bangin' though!
