I discovered this week that Muhammad Ali's mother, Odessa Lee Clay (pictured below), was an O'Grady whose grandfather, Abe O'Grady emigrated to the US from Ennis, County Clare soon after the Civil War.

My paternal great-great-grandfather, Michael O'Grady emigrated from Kilfenora, County Clare (about 30km from Ennis) in 1854.

Michael and Abe would have been related...

As a kid I had zero interest in sport but was fascinated by Ali - his self mastery, his mindset, his elegance in an ugly sport, his willingness to stand up for his beliefs, and his wit & eloquence.

The O'Grady family motto is “Vulneratus non victus.” Latin for "Wounded but not conquered."

It reminded me of an Ali quote -
“Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.”

Such a strange and fascinating connection to make.

How closely were Michael and Abe related?
There are a lot of O'Gradys in the world.

    That will require further investigation.
From what I have been able to find out so far they would have lived within 25km of each other and Abe migrated about a decade after Michael.

I will have to check with my uncle who has done a lot of research into our family history to find out what he knows or how to establish the the closeness of their relationship.

I found some interesting stuff about my family, thanks to an aunt's research, plus a bit of background knowledge of my family names, and so on.

Yours is an extremely cool find, if it pans out. Keep us updated, pretty please.

Erm, not as far as I know. Family name is Bellamy and, the cool thing about that is, everyone in the world with that name, or the equivalent, Bel-Ami, is related. That's including a guy from Redbone (Tony), the frontman in Muse (Matt), a footy player (Craig), a novelist (Rex not his real name - he took the middle name of his cousin, my dad), an illustrator well known in the 60s and 70s (Frank), a country pop band (Bellamy Brothers), and a notorious pirate, Sam Bellamy.

On me mom's side, I'm also related to Cesar Romero. :)

Apparently I share a common ancestor with Niall of the Nine Hostages. So I've got that going for me, which is nice.
