I discovered this week that Muhammad Ali's mother, Odessa Lee Clay (pictured below), was an O'Grady whose grandfather, Abe O'Grady emigrated to the US from Ennis, County Clare soon after the Civil War. My paternal great-great-grandfather, Michael O'Grady emigrated from Kilfenora, County Clare (about 30km from Ennis) in 1854. Michael and Abe would have been related... As a kid I had zero interest in sport but was fascinated by Ali - his self mastery, his mindset, his elegance in an ugly sport, his willingness to stand up for his beliefs, and his wit & eloquence. The O'Grady family motto is “Vulneratus non victus.” Latin for "Wounded but not conquered." It reminded me of an Ali quote - “Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.” Such a strange and fascinating connection to make.
