Has any one found good a good alternative to the mutron, something smaller? I have owned a discombobulator, and checked out clips of the funkaduck and others. I liked the discombobulator a lot - but one of of the sounds I like to get is Garcia's, and the Mutron seems to do that best. I know some of the pedals do other sounds great, but I'd like to get his sound, among others......

I might need to try it again - I thought it was a little brighter and cleaner, and couldn't get the same growl.

If you really want the real deal, get one of the older Ibanez AF-201 (same era as the TS-808). They seem to sell for anywhere from $250 to $400.

Heard some outrageous clips of the AF-201, clearly what the maxon was based on, but these clips! Unfortunately, I'd like to unload the mutron, gain space on my board, and make some money getting into a cheaper pedal - the ibanez is going the wrooong direction...

You can ask someone to build the Geofex Neutron for you (pcb available from General Guitar Gadgets), that's a Mu-Tron clone.

Someone I know used to sell an improved clone of the Mu-Tron: with sensitivity knob instead of a boost (so you can change the response without changing the volume) and a blend control, but he didn't build any the last 2 years. He was working on an MXR-sized version, the old one was a bit bigger:

But I'm tired of telling interested people that he didn't start building them yet (every x months) ;)

Not sure if the circuit is the same, and I've never tried an original Mutron, but I've heard several people say the Xotic Robotalk is very similar. It does have the +9V/-9VDC power supply of the Mutron. I love the way it sounds, that's for sure!

I built one of them, made my own layout though. A bit smaller than the real thing, but not an MXR size.

I think the Robotalk is based on the Maestro Filter - Sample/Hold

Very nice, can I use that picture as an illustration for the GEO Neutron on my site?

I have a Funky Fish in the big box and it's an awesome pedal--and I think it sounds better than the only Mutron I've ever heard--but that's just it, it's the only one I've ever heard. Gert builds a good box. :AOK If he gets that sucker in an MXR sized box, you let me know!
