    Hi guys!
    newbie here...

well, i bought recently off ebay a vintage mxr m-143 limiter, like this:

i'm not familiar with limiters or compressors but it seems to me that the attack and release knobs do nothing, i mean i have sensitivity and output @ 12 oclock and as i keep turning the other 2 i hear nothing...

i know that limiters are kind of "hidden" effects and their jod is to limit some levels but is this normal?
    thanks!
    B

I have an original from the '80s. Is this the same thing as a compressor?

A compressor will limit peaks & raise softer playing. A limiter just addresses the peaks.

Did you ever use one? If so for what?

I understand what a compressor does but not too much what a limiter does...
Can you explain further what do you mean by the word "addresses"? an example maybe?
    thanks...
