I have one of these Gibson USA cases with the 3 digit combo...... I thought it was set to 000, but it won't open anymore.

First of all, how would you set a custom combo for one of those cases? .... or are they all preset to something? I guess I can go 000 to 999 and hopefully will hit it :messedup

    Any better ideas?

I had that happen to me with a new Gibson guitar. The dealer just broke it open and gave me a new case under warranty. :) Unfortunately those locks are very crudely made.

I think you could just find the correct screwdriver/allen wrench and unbolt the top part of the locked section. then it will be open!

I've had it happen to, i had to pry it open and I never used the latch again...I know that doesn't help you though...If I was there I'd pry it open for you.

HA !! I figured it out....

Here is what I did, I put pressure on the latch ( pulling as to open it ). While holding pressure on the latch I rotated the MSD and when it hit 6 the latch gave just a tiny bit! Then I kept pressure on the latch and rotated the midde digit.... the latch gave just the slightest bit on 4. Finally I rotated the LSD ( it was real hard to spin since all the pressure was on it. It hit 0 and the latch gave all the way! So, the combo was 640. Weird, I guess it's my other case that is the 000.

Man, those are cheap locks, but that's is one way to crack it. :BEER

I was about to do the StMaster's suggestion above just to get the guitar out!

I leave the little red plastic lock disabler on all my Gibson cases. I've heard numerous cases of what you just experienced.

The only Gibson case that doesn't have it...had been mangled by a dealer when it was new...and I got it for $50.00 for my Melody Maker.

    I hate those combo locks.

Find an 8 year-old and offer him $5 to run the numbers. I'll bet he gets it in less than 10 minutes.

Check Gibson's web site. They have a procedure that worked for me.

I had one one time that was set to 347 but then the lock got touchy and it would only open if the combo was set right AND you pushed the button a certain way and put pressure on the latch.

I sort-of feel sorry for whomever ended up with that guitar later, as they likely cycled through all the numbers and it still didn't work.

If you're out there and can't get the black L-4CES's case open, then that's what it is!

+1. In the Support section, in the FAQ, one of the questions is about the case locks and the answer outlines the procedure for unlocking the thing.

Same thing happened with my SG case a couple years ago. PITA, but the lock is so cheap that it is a quick and easy fix once you know how to do it.
