I traded an acoustic guitar I was using for a '78 Musicmaster bass...I figured I'd need to upgrade the bridge and the pickup and was looking at some of the pickups designed for the Fender '51 Precision...

But wow...it's got a great sound just like it is...anyone else have experience with these "cheap" basses?

    I have a 77 and it's quite nice.
My daughter has laid claim to it so I don't get to play it as much as I'd like.
I wouldn't call it a cheap bass at all.
With the exception of the Strat pick-up it a great short scale bass.
We know that can be fixed in short order.
Mine has some kind of active pick-up that was installed back in 81.
It has the same shape as the stock pick-up only wider.

I started out on one of these but went to a Precison shortly afteward.

For some reason I couldn't get a proper tone out of the E string. Dunno why. It would disappear in the mix when the other strings didn't.

I too have a '77, and it plays and sounds great as well. Along the way, somebody swapped the stock bridge for a Badass heavy duty bridge. Otherwise, it's all stock. It's a joy to play and cops some very warm, old-school low end.

    Thanks, j

That isn't too far off from what my '66 Music Master II guitar looks like. However, the guitar is in pieces and has been in the process of being restored for about the last 6 or 7 years. :jo
