My new years gear resolution.....

Hello guys,

I have been afflicted by a serious bought of GAS over the last two years. So much so that I have realized that I have been spending more time in the TGP emporium then playing guitar. It's not that I am not having a good time, but I feel like I have lost my way of the path I had initially set for my self.

So here is is my New Years resolution:

I will not buy any gear (besides strings, picks, and other required things that wear out) for a period of 365 days from the starting January 1st, 2010. In addition I am creating the simplest possible setup I can so that I am forced to concentrate on technique & feeling and improving.

Here is my rig (sorry for the poor picture from my cell phone - will upload a better one soon):

The rig is as follows:

Fender Eric Clapton Signature --> Hardwire Tuner --> Fulltone OCD --> EHX Memory Boy --> T-Rex Tonebug Reverb --> Tungsten Mosaic 8" Champ clone.

I still have 2 days to make changes and to buy any gear I will need --> so if you have suggestions please feel free to make them. Yea, I know I have a serious GAS problem :)

What do you guys think? So what's your gear related new year's resolution???

You already have everything you need, grasshopper. You are correct to focus now on the "you" part of the equation. I predict great success.

That seems like a good new year resolution. I think I'll jump on the vagon, except the strings....

well crappers, if vparikh is weening himself from the buying pool, I guess I have to resolve to buying his share ....

I resolve in the year 2010 that I will buy no more than 2 Suhr guitars and an Axe-Fx rig .....

I vow to end 2010 with more gear than I start it with! (This is an attempt at reverse psychology since previous years have featured vows to reduce my collection only to break it very, very quickly:phones).

I have a great Deluxe Reverb clone, PTP, great sounding. My resolution is to quit lusting for a Bruno. It is going to take a big effort on my part. So unless I come across an unexpected windfall or a Cow Tipper is offered at a "too good to be true" price I'm putting them out of my mind. In the mean time I have about a day to drool over the one for sale here. Waaah !

I use to have extra stuff to sell so I could buy things, now I'm down to the minimum. One bass, one bass amp, one guitar and one guitar amp.

Interesting. That's what I bought in 2009. Some of what I bought, at least.

I need a new wah. And a Suhr Tele. That's all I'm planning to buy this year.

Ditch all of the pedals and get a Peterson Tuner (best pedal out there due to its sweetened 440 tuning) and a VanAmps Sole-Mate reverb unit. After that I'd get a decent old 12ax7 valve (RCA/Mullard) and a decent old 6v6 valve (tung sol/svetlana) and a Jensen/Weber 8" speaker for the amp and then you are good to go.

I play with that set up at home and believe it gives a great sound. See here:

However it is worth mentioning, I play a lot on my electric unplugged. Then you really have to use your fingers and it all seems to get a (little) easier when you plug in.

Just a few thoughts.

Cheers,
Phil

I'd love to be able to make that resolution but I know it would never happen. lol

I made the same resolution for this year as well. I have all the gear I'll ever really need and I'm saving up for a down payment on a house, so no new gear this year for me.

2010 is down to be a year of consolidation and refinemen, at least musically! I'll be buying an Eggle New York Broadway in a few days (wanted one for years, and finally found one), but my only other hopes/plans are to put a set of Burns Trisonics in a Strat and to find a good donor Tele for a Vintage Vibe Charlie Christian neck pup (bridge partner tbc) and a Bigsby. A couple of unplayed guitars - a Squier Esprit, an Epiphone Nighthawk - will go to hopefully good homes. I might upgrade to a groovier tremolo pedal (I fancy one of the Empress pedals), and replace the Morley FX Blender with a Toadworks Enveloope (modulation that fades in on a sustained chord is a very tempting ida), but that can wait. My ambition will be to spend more time trying to record what I write, but that will require more discipline :)
