My wife's grandfather passed away 2 days ago.
Funeral is tomorrow (he lived to be 93).

Yesterday, my wife took the black suit that I last wore at our wedding (20 months ago), ironed the pants , etc.

All I had to do was try it on, just to be sure all was good.

It was a REAL struggle to do the pants up - like, it took some time and effort.

    I am not surprised.

I know I have put a couple of pounds on - I took a very relaxed attitude to eating and excercise, in the recent cold winter months.

But as a very skinny guy by nature, seems like any weight I gained went straight to the old spare tire, and no where else.

I used to be able to eat as much as I wanted, whenever I wanted - no consequence. Guess I am geting older, ha ha.

Anyways - starting today - I am going to be more careful of what, and how much I eat.

I would like to drop 5 pounds before Canada Day (July 1st).

My plan is simply to eat right - and try on those same pants once a month - until they fit again :)

    2 options:

    1.) portion control

2.) have your tailor let out your pants

Don't be too terribly quick to discount #2. Gaining weight as your metabolism changes with age isn't abnormal, and in most cases, there's not a ton you can do about it. I'm not saying "surrender to it".....just don't ignore what occurs naturally.

If you have time in your schedule, take brisk walks several times a week. I know it's tough during winter months, but it will help. I was doing about 5 miles 3 or 4 times a week at one point. Try to get your time down to 14 minute miles if not a bit faster. Lot's of smart phone apps to keep track as well. I use Edomondo Pro. I think it cost $5 US. There are free ones as well. Good luck

FWIW, I had a heart attack back in April '14, and since then, have dropped more than 40 pounds, due primarily to a) eliminating junk food (McDonalds, Burger King, etc.), b) watching my "real food" portions, and c) regular cardio exercise 3x week.

The portion control component has been, in my opinion, the biggest single contributor. And, in spite of eating a lot less than I used to eat, I don't miss it at all.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather.

That is what I was thinking - I have been eating too much of everything lately.
Just need to be more sensible.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys :)

Hunnicutt is switching out your pants as an elaborate practical joke.

If you have a smart phone there are applications that will let you track what you eat. I started doing that end of last summer using My Fitness Pal. It was an eye opening experience knowing how many calories I was consuming in a single day and how many of them I could easily do without. That and a little more activity (desk job) and I've lost 16 and am almost where I want to be. I don't always stay under my goal every day, often go over by three or four hundred calories, but I'm still below the number I was likely eating beforehand when I wouldn't think twice about stopping for a 650 calorie McFlurry after lunch.

Oh and the apps make it pretty easy for you to log entries - MFP has a bar code scanner for entry.

They didn't try terribly hard to look like guys who were living in Korea in the early fifties did they?

Let's count the anachronisms shall we:

    1. He's tan, for chrissakes
    2. 70's porn star 'stache
    3. Hair is way too long and unkempt for 50's
    4. Undershirt screams 70's

Five pounds by July 1? You could lose five by Mar. 15th with little effort and minimal diet changes.

Best wishes about the passing of your grandfather.

I've noticed the funniest thing when trying on my old uniforms from when I was in the Army (from 17-22). I've come to the conclusion that polyester shrinks over the course of 25 years.

    That's definitely it.

I weighed in at 204 at New Years (6ft tall). My dad's obesity is part of what shortened his life. My doctor wants me nearer 175. I started counting calories with the Lose It app at the beginning of the year. Added a Fit Bit at beginning of Feb. I am down to 187 today.
You can do it. But it has to be purposeful. At 40yrs old, it take more effort to lose every half pound as compared to 10 or even 5 years ago for me.

That's nothing. You can easily drop 5 pounds in a few weeks.
