My Review of Paul Rodgers in Hollywood, FL

Hey Ya'll!

Checking in to repost another one of my day (night) gig pieces. Caught the Paul Rodgers gig at the Seminole Hard Rock Live the other night and it was a really great show.

I'm a big time Free fan, can take or leave most of Bad Company, and I really dug the Firm. All things being equal, he put on a really impressive show, and Howard Leese definitely impressed me with his chops.

Here's the review! http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/countygrind/2013/01/paul_rodgers_-_seminole_hard_r.php

Great line:

Paul Rodgers will always write anthems best suited to the stereos of cars built before the age of fuel injection.

Love Paul and Free, much of Bad Co. and little of the Firm and lets face it, if it weren't for Bad Co., Paul might be virtually unknown and broke!

That said, Howard Leese is a fine guitarist and Paul is still in fine form but no guitarist fit Paul Rodgers voice quite like Mick Ralphs.

Mick Ralphs knew how to write cool very catchy riffs that were part blues, glam, pop and southern rock, even country.

I go around with folks all the time about Paul and Bad Co. but i saw the Bad Co. shows in the 70's and they were outstanding all 3 times.

My first concert was Bad Co in the 70's (Burning Sky tour). In an era before pitch correction and other tricks, they really brought it. Paul was and remains a vocalist's vocalist.

"Burning Sky" tour was my 2nd Bad Co concert and Paul Rodgers was on his karate dress thing along with with all of the karate moves on stage as well, great show!

"Burning Sky" is a fav song of mine too...i love all of the weird tunings Mick Ralphs did with Bad Co as well.

By "Desolation Angels", Bad Co were using Strats mostly and a cleaner Marshall sound....the country & southern rock sound were apparent at this point too.

I don't care what anyone says, Bad Co did 5 strong albums in a row.

Amazing how the OP posts a rather succinct, detailed, and uniquely structured review, with a really original twist of closing thoughts/loose ends at the end, but certain people's posts are completely unresponsive to the review, and more their own personal experience or opinions completely irrelevant to the OP's post.

Locust, really dug the review in all respects. Amazing how PR is still a major force in power rock tenors !

Locust, what did you think of the venue? I'm down in Ft Laud for the winter and wondered if it's a good place to go

Love this paragraph:
The performance, when coupled with grinding of couples in the age-appropriate crowd, had us wondering why Pfizer never used the tune in a Viagra commercial and why we're here, writing this blog, and not in the marketing department of a large pharmaceutical company.

Haha! If the post prompts people to reminisce, that's cool with me! Thanks for the kind words about the article and for taking the time to read it!

Sound is usually good, drinks are expensive, but it does the trick for sure.

I would look into who is playing at the Culture Room and Revolution as well for bigger shows, and for mid-level things, we ain't got a whole lot.

Check out Purehoney.com and the New Times (my sites -- Village Voice) calendar.

Hahaha, I was partial to that one myself. I'm really fortunate to have an editor that allows me to say essentially whatever I want.

Excellent review. I'm kinda lukewarm on Paul Rodgers, although he does have some great moments...and Howard Leese is, and always has been, a total pro. If they were in the neighborhood I'd probably go see them after reading your review.

OK, I'll add more than my two cents. I saw Paul about 5 years ago and he continues to amaze with his vocal abilities. I've always been a fan of Bad Co but never realized his true greatness until "The Law". Honestly, the way he floated note to note, and hit every one just made me sit up and take notice---and go back to all the older material for a better listen.
