Really nice condition overall. Cool Drip Edge cosmetics. Reminds me of my drip edge Super Reverb that I bought new "back in the day"!
Some of the circuit had started the transition to Silverface specs in this late 1968 amp, but the previous owner had the amp converted to Blackface specs. I'm no techie, but the mods look to have been done very nicely, and with quality components. Real nice tube compliment, too: two RCA 7025's, Telefunken ECC83, two Telefunken ECC81's, GE 6L6GC power tubes, and a JJ GZ34 rectifier.
I gave the amp a good demo today, about an hour in the basement. The original speakers were reconed in 2005, but the amp came loaded with newer Eminence RW&B and Texas Heat speakers in it, which are the speakers I used in the demo. I was using my long time friend, a 2004 Suhr Standard with s/s/h pickup configuration.
The amp's noise floor is very low, which was nice to hear (or not hear, as the case may be!) when I first turned it on. Both channels sound great, but I spent most of the time on the reverb channel. The reverb is fairly bright but can be dialed in for just a hint which is how I like it. With the tube compliment mentioned above, I found the amp to break up a little too early for my taste and in a somewhat 'edgy' way, but replacing V2 with a 12AY7 completely took care of that......more headroom and smoother breakup. Alternately, with the original tube compliment, I could tame the breakup by plugging into the low gain input, but there seemed to be some sacrifice in the overall tonal characterisitcs. So the 12AY7 is the way to go, for me. Settings on the reverb channel were vol 7, treb 7, bass 6, reverb 2.5 with the bright switch off.
The sound is classic 60s Fender......I've been experimenting with BF-Fender inspired boutiques for the last few years (Carr, Tone King, Bruno, D. Z, VVT) and this Pro Reverb just 'out-Fenders' them all!
It's not as mid-scopped as I was thinking it might be, it has a very nice upper mid presence that really makes the B & E strings sing. I tested my two OD pedals with the amp, Fulldrive2 and Zendrive, and they both sound good but I think I prefer the Fulldrive2. If nothing else, the FD2 definitely cleans up better with the guitar's volume control.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. And I'm looking forward to trying this one with the band!
