NAD - Winfield 5 watt

I've been looking at low-powered plexi-inspired amps to play around the house. After checking out all of the usual suspects, I called up Winnie Thomas and discussed options. We decided to go with his 5 watt (one 6v6; can take an el24 or 6l6 as well). Sent him a deposit and less than 3 weeks later, the amp is ready. I finally got to plug it in this evening (have been dealing with a kidney stone - OUCH!) and I have to say its more than exceeded my expectations. Great note separation, flexible controls and great tone at a volume that will not sterilize!

Winnie was great to work with...super knowledgeable and a prince of a guy. I know his Cyclone model has a bit of a cult following, but the Winfield model is a great option in the plexi camp. I would definitely have him build me another amp...first-class all the way.

Here's a pic he sent right before it shipped (so kill me...I like orange lol!)

I've been familiar with Winfield Thomas since the ampage.org days and haven't heard his name since. So good to see he is still doing his thing. He was a huge contributor to the forum back in those days. He helped me with some technical issues I was having on one of my first builds and even shared some of his schematic designs with me to try out. I doubt one could get an amp built by a cooler, more down to earth cat. Congrats!

Want. Btw love the orange. Eugene, does Winnie build the cabinet also?

I believe he has a guy that builds them for him back in VT (I think...) The cabinet is very well made and he'll cover it in anything you like (apparently Mrs. Thomas hated the orange lol!)

Thanks for the kind words,

The cabinet was built out here in AZ. I still get some now and then from Eric, who is now in NH, but it became too pricey due to shipping cost.

Arizona has been good to us, and yes, my wife was happy to see the Orange amp leave :)

Winnie no Tempe guitar show?
I went once a couple years ago. It was not worth my while.

I'll be at the Gretsch get-together in Marana on March 8 though.

From the Gretsch Pages:

Arizona Gretsch Roundup 2014
The Arizona Gretsch Roundup is scheduled for March 08, 2013 at the Marana, AZ Community Center, adjacent to the Avra Valley Fire station located at 15790 West Silverbell Road, Marana, AZ. Festivities officially start at 12:00 noon and we have to relinquish the building at 10:00 PM. Last year we had several people show up at 10:00 AM and that was fine by us. They got first pick of the donuts but were impressed into service assembling the PA, etc.
