I'm in the market for this sound:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doLyPGJV5us&feature=related (his tongue in cheek take on I'll See the Light Tonight)

I know that he uses a mid 70's Marshall modded by Bob Bradshaw (though it could've been John that did the work) and a VHT UL. I've never heard a solo clip of the VHT to know if this sound is that, or the Marshall. I've heard his Marshall solo and it sounded like this clip.

I currently have a Cameron JCM 800 Aldrich that gets close, but is a little fuzzier than this. I also have a CAA OD100SE that is sort of similar, but more hi fi and not as Marshall(y).

To me his sound is articulate, but has a little forgiveness (sag/compression) in it, similar to the Cameron. But it also has that Marshall crunch and airiness to it.

Would a VHT get me there? A Bray? Is there another mod out there that is close?

Seems you have gathered a lot of info so far, done your homework, but have you talked to David Bray about it? If you explain what you're after and give him those examples, I bet he could make you a clip that comes very close.

David's a great guy to work with, I bought a new JTM45 through him and got several of his mods done. Step by step, it was a pleasure.

I haven't talked to him yet. Thanks for the info. I've been leaning towards his work and see that there are two Mod 1's on the bay right now.

    What mods did you get?

First of all.. He is a total hack . I honestly thought it was a Malmsteen cover. Get some originality! Second, I seem to recall he was going with ENGL. I saw him demoing his amps off a thread from the Vinnie Moore forum a while back. Anyway.. his tone was much better when playing through the Marshalls. I think he also boosts with a handy old tube screamer but i may be getting confused with Michael Angelo. The nasal lead quality is there though.. With your Cameron modded Marshall, maybe back off the gain and use a clean boost. That will smooth it out. I do this with my hot mod in my jcm800. If I run it past 6 it gets mushier so i clean boost.

Whether he is a hack or not isn't what I was after, it's the tone. I know he has his influences, and I'm not saying I'm trying to be him, I just think that his amp tones are great. Another example would be Nuno's on Pornographiti, which is a Marshall (don't know the model) boosted with a Rat.

His Engl clip didn't sound good. His Marshall tone is his best, and from the interviews I've read, he feels the same way. I have a Powerball already, which is great for the Mesa on roids type of thing, but not for 80's shreddy stuff. He could be using a boost to get the articulation. MAB is completely different tone wise, he always sounds like he is running straight to the board.

I've tried to cut back the gain on the Cameron. It's either on or off. I run it at 3 right now (out of 10). I've tried running a clean boost into it, but it doesn't change it much. It sounds great for leads, but it is too mushy/fuzzy for tight rhythms. I've though of running the CAA with it, one for rhythms and one for leads, but that's a lot of crap to haul around.

    Thanks for the input.
