I've used a Crunchbox for high-gain Marshall sounds for a while, but lately I'm bothered by a lack of low end, and some muddiness. Any suggestions for a pedal with lots of gain, but a bit more bass and clarity than the Crunchbox? Anyone know anything about the Lovepedal Purple Plexi? Would prefer to stay away from the OCD.

    Thanks!

I just played my friend's Lovepedal PP800 this week and it crushes the Crunchbox. Plenty of gain (can clean up to a med gain also), plenty of headroom, high mid boost or cut on the tone knob. Sean's stuff is great. I'd recommend it.

I have a BJF Dyna Red Distortion. I paid over $400 for it. The BYOC Shredder sits right next to it. I paid $90 for it. Its not leaving, it sounds amazing. It sounds more like a cranked marshall than the DRD, although they both have their strong points. Probably one of the most forgotten about "cranked marshall" pedals around.

Also, I have heard good things about:

    Emma Reezafratzitz
    CMATMODS Brownie
    Lovepedal PP800
    Menatone KOTB

You couldn't go wrong with any of them, although I don't have personal experience with the latter.

Benlevy, have you tried running the Crunch Box at a higher voltage than 9 volts? It can take up to 24 volts, I found 18 volts made it come alive, it was less compressed/congested sounding, give it a try before spending the money on another pedal.

I love hearing about cheaper pedals kicking ass! Kewl! I never believed the BYOC or GGG pedals were really that great, but I guess they must be! THere is a certain arrogance about snagging pricy pedals. I got it myself for awhile. Then experimenting and recording them, I realized what worked and what didn't. I sold a lot of 400 dollar type pedals, about 5. I sold a lot of 300 dollar type pedals, about 4. I kept my Stage Hog, 600 USD, because it delivers, but I found it only records well with the RIGHT tubes. The tubes it came with, the same tubes that I made clips with 1 and a 1/2 years ago actually, don't really record great. In person, it sounds full, sustains well, huge bass, lower mids and complex, but recorded it sounds too throaty for me, sharp highs, and washy. That is just me, though, but with other tubes, I decided it is a keeper.

Could you make a comparison clip???? I had the DRD, so it would be a perfect reference for me.

Menatone KOTB is really good for full range Marshall sounds.

Expensive but lots of flexibility plus boost on board.

A bit more to it than your average 3 knob box.
