Went to use my echoplex this morning and upon turning it on smoke came billowing out from under the tape cartridge area and the tape stopped moving. I removed the unit from the casing and nothing appears bad. I'm thinking the motor died. Anybody else had this happen or heard of this? Additionally, anybody know someone that could repair a plex or should I just sell it for parts?

Sucks, I only bought this a couple months ago off ebay for around 400 and have only used it maybe 15 or 20 times...

I can't diagnose the exact problem but I suggest you should keep it. There are still parts around on eBay etc and there is a reasonable amount of info on the net about how to fix them. Like you said it could just be the motor or one other component - so persevere and hang on to it. Tape delays take a bit of work but it's worth it for the sound!!!

By pressing the reset button I can get it working for a few seconds then it shuts off. Anybody have a clue on this?

Check the power supply electrolytic capacitors.

Well I opened it up and smelled around and located a capacitor that burned. It looks to be part of a circuit that operates this control arm I've highlighed in the picture. So the echoplex works now except this swiveling arm doesn't automatically push up against the rotating metal pin. As a quick solution I've found a way to manually push up this arm against the pin using a piece of cardboard and now the echoplex is working per usual. Anybody have experience with this kind of trouble or replacing the cap in question?
