I am looking to expand my horizons :)

Recently, I became interested in learning more about SGs. This came after watching some videos of Frank Hannon from Tesla playing one live. His tone was pretty awesome. I know it has more to do with his amps and stuff....but the guitar itself sounded great. Are the newer historic series good? Or there certain years that were better?

Any and all information is welcome
    Thanks
    Monte

The Historic '61 SG is great-if you go with the Vibrola you will lose some sustain and could have tuning issues but then again the vibrola is more for a subtle wiggle and for good looks. The Historic also has the long neck tenon which is important for sustain and stability.

If you can, get a late '06 or '07 Historic. They started using better wood for the custom shop guitars then and it does make a difference for those with sensitive ears.

Love my SG, mine has some extra bite to it.

Some of the older SG specials with the P-90s sound wonderous.

Great for slide work as well.

Cons: Mine was always difficult to tune until I replaced the bridge.
They aren't well balanced, IE - neck heavy
Don't ever drop one as the headstocks have been known to break off.
