First off... here is the song (While listening.. play close attention to the following time stamps--don't feel obligated to listen to the song in its entirety, but through, you'll hear the interaction between the drums and guitar in different ways--: 0:08-0:17, 1:07-1:15 and 3:26-END. Those are the parts I'll be explaining and asking advice/opinions on. Vocals are removed aside from the 3:26-END mark.) http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldr...s/InMyEyes.mp3 Overall notes: The drums are intentionally recorded at a high input gain to add clipping the top end of each strike, the combination of this and a flanger give an odd interaction between the guitar mid-range frequencies and the drums themselves. The guitar is recorded with relatively low gain... actually almost none, but the collapse of each drum strike makes the guitar appear to be recorded at a high gain setting. I did it this way to emphasize the initial attack of each note on the guitar rhythm. Now... I'll take the end of the song first, because it has the most interesting things going on. First, let me explain what was done with the EQing in this part to help set the mood of desperation at the end of the song (This is far more audible through headphones and considering increasing how audible this is in the final mix). EQ: At the point where the Glissando starts with the strings, quite a few things happen. A second, stereo track of the entire mix cuts in and levels are adjusted accordingly so no volume increase happens. The right channel is panned out 100% right during the duration of this measure. It is also sent out to a sub with an EQ using a low frequency roll-off so only high-mid to high frequencies come through. The left channel does the polar opposite. Pan and EQ both. The un-EQ'd song still plays through both left and right. The combination of the three, with the pans, creates an odd phasing effect that fools your ears into thinking that your left ear went partially deaf, creating a minor panic--setting up the listener to feel the "desperation" of the end of the song. After this, various elements are added to end of the song to create different effects. One of the ones I like the best, though almost inaudible in the mix is: http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldr...-Collapses.mp3 The frequencies between the tape stops and the radio tuner effectively collapse the over all mix at certain points, making your ears, once again, feel as if somethings wrong with them. Next was creating a melody out of the strings played backwards (this is a lot of fun to do!): http://home.centurytel.net/flanneldr...-BWStrings.mp3 Various other elements were added as well... backwards vocals, orchestral string progression, etc. to create the overall effect. 0:08-0:17 and 1:07-1:15: These two parts were done in similar ways. The overall idea was to use natural compression in odd ways to help set 'the mood'. I am looking for opinions of the implemented ideas. I am also EXTREMELY interested in suggestions for alternate ideas for accomplishing some of these effects using different techniques. Thanks a ton!
