Hi guys,
We're looking at throwing some New Orleans flavor into the set list to get people dancing and need some suggestions. My band is a jazz/blues funk band with a powerhouse female singer. I appreciate your help in advance.

Thanks,

Carnival Time - I think it's by Bo Dollis or something like that - also a version by Al Johnson IIRC.

Ain't Got No Home: Clarence Frogman Henry

Shame, Shame, Shame: Smiley Lewis

I'm Glad, Glad: Lloyd Price

Little Liza Jane: Huey Piano Smith

Looka, No Hair: Professor Longhair

The Big Beat: Fats Domino

and it mentions New Orleans and your lead singer will probably have fun with it . . . Lady Marmalade: LaBelle

If your singer is female, you need some New Orleans female songbird's songs.

Check out the catalog on Irma Thomas especially.

Another idea would be the late Marva Wright.

I would also include:

Let the Good Times Roll - Shirley & Lee (First song I thought of. Female vocalist and a great bar song). Funny personal side note. My grandfather was an accountant in Gretna, a suburb of New Orleans. These guys, Shirley and Lee came to him to do their taxes before they had really made it big. When it came time to pay him for his services, they gave him an autographed poster of themselves. He was not amused and unfortunately threw it out.

Iko Iko - Dixie Cups (Probably the most covered New Orleans classic)

Don't You Just Know It - Huey Piano Smith ( GREAT interactive tune to really get the crowd going)

Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Lloyd Price

I Hear You Knockin' - Smiley Lewis (covered by Dave Edmunds in the 70s)

Any Fats Domino

To a lesser extent (They're fun, but may not be the style you're seeking):

See You Later Alligator - Bobby Charles

You Talk Too Much - Frankie Ford
