Those are the stock '57s that come in the 339. They mellow out pretty nicely, too.

I would like to know what the REAL volume of this is.
I have went through way too many super low wattage amps in the past couple years based on clips and reviews that claim to be bedroom levels, and most seemed to have been designed for very large and loud bedrooms, preferably with thick cement walls. the valve jr comes to mind.
can this be compared to say a loud television? can you hear your strings or just the amp?

Well, I wouldn't call the VJ a super-low-watt amp. A 5-watt amp is still 50% as loud as a 50-watt amp, after all. The Killer Ant, at about 3/4-watt, is 28% as loud as a 50-watt amp, or about half the volume of a 5-watt. The good news is that this one breaks up well before you hit full volume, so you don't have to crank it to get that bluesy grit. With the 10" speaker it's about as quiet as you can get it, but it might still drown-out a TV set.

Here's a great essay about the relative volumes of various amp wattages:

Greasy and sleazy...I like it! Does it clean up any when rolling down the guitar volume control?

thanks for the link OM Flyer. would a tube change break this up even faster, say a gainier (is that a word?) 12ax7?
I had a microbaby, which was a spectacular amp, and one thing I liked about it was it would hit a certain volume level, and everything past that would just make it howl more, rather than get louder. does the blackheart do something like that?

I'm sure you can do a lot with the character of this amp with different tubes, but I haven't experimented much. And yes - from about 7 to 10, the amp doesn't really get that much louder; it just gets more ballsy. And it kills through a 4 X 12.
