I don't think he was bashing your guitar specifically, just JMs in general. It made for an awkward video, IMHO. As @The bear stated, it would have been better if he just compared the two while highlighting the differences rather than talking about how poor the JM configuration is.

No I understand the JM's in general, not mine. But pointing out that Jazzmasters are typically bright or that the stock as designed bridges/trems are quirky f**ckers isn't exactly news to us now is it. He's not wrong now is he.

    Dohenys aren't Jazzmasters.

21 frets on a G&L = fail. That alone killed any interest I had.

Thanks for the laugh. Their QC/Service issues would keep me from ever buying a new one again, and I own about 30 of them.

G&L is more and more just a "me to" version of FMIC, where you get more option choices without having to go custom shop. When they went to a standard 9.5" radius, the coffin was sealed. They used to be very stand-apart in terms of ergonomics etc, that's why I gave up Fender and started playing them decades ago. Now, pretty much just a Fender with a better bridge and worse resale.

It just seemed like a bit odd that he would say he doesn't understand the rhythm circuit and the pickups are something that people swap. I get that they are different but when a side by side is a few licks played minutes apart and the player is telling you how much richer and dynamic the one guitar is it's more of a sales pitch than an A/B. I like when they are the same lines played right after each other. There was no real way to hear a proper A/B in that video. Which I guess didn't matter because he told us which was the better guitar.

Edward Laurence Doheny was a California oil tycoon who, in 1892, drilled the first successful oil well in the Los Angeles City Oil Field. Namesake of Doheny State Beach Dana Point, CA

If you’ve seen “There Will Be Blood,” that is loosely based on him.

I love the JM trem, know what the rhythm circuit does (roughly), and I think the reason most people swap out JM pups is because their guitars came stock with modern "upgrades" (e.g., hotter pickups) and the swappers want something closer to the original. If the dude, who works in a guitar shop, can't get the basics around the JM right, it doesn't inspire confidence in what follows. As it happens, I thought the A/B test was fine. I'd still want to try one myself, but it confirms that it'd be worth the effort to do so. ;)

BTW, I spend 98% of my time on the neck pup, but the bridge pup on your JM sounds great, Neil! :) -E

I snagged this today - ebony board, blocks, matching headstock. Don't hesitate to ask for a discount if you're shopping for one. My experience is that 15-20% is possible with most dealers. I got almost 20% off on this one.

Nice. The matching headstock looks great I bet. They play great. Enjoy that. Were you or are you also a Jazzmaster player?

It's not a G&L thread without Ray Barbee chiming in to bash them.

Great looking Dohenys in the last few posts. That's what is really nice with the G&L brand.
You want an Ebony board, we got that. You want Jet Black with a Frost finish and matching headstock, no problem. How about a saddle lock bridge instead of the tremolo bridge, yep!

Want one under 7 lbs, Empress wood option, etc.

I own enough of them, I have a right to bash them until they fix their issues. I'm not holding my breath.

Are you the guy who has played with the Mattson 2, or do you just share a name?

I saw this vid too. I'd prefer a comparison between the Doheny and an ASAT Special...
