I went to GC today and played a wonderful USA SG.One piece body and neck.Set up was excellent with med low action.Fret work was great and this thing sounded great.I knew it as soon as I played it acoustically.Big fat honking mids with great clarity and bite. The finish had sunk into the wood without any stickyness.Nice neck carve that was full but, not a bat.
Played it through a DR and an Egnater Tweaker combo. It was a good sounding guitar and I salute Gibby.:aok
Only $1100 too.
No, I didn't buy it as SG's are not my bag.
I was quite impressed though.

Cool. I bought a GC/Musician's Friend special run. I guess that's what you call it since those are the only two places you can get it. It's a "SG Special Satin Ebony". Basically, it's a Special in satin nitro finish and comes with a HSC. It has the 490R/490T combo in it. I love it. It resonated well unplugged and sounds killer plugged in. I had to have a nut slot filed and a basic setup done, but it's a definite keeper at this point.

Enjoy your SG.
No set up/nut filing etc required on this one.Stayed in tune and the strings were not old.
I've been setting up my own guitars for almost 20 years.I could just put on a fresh set of strings and just played.;)

Mine stayed in tune prior to the work. But the G string had this pinging thing going on when tuning that I didn't like so I had the one slot filed out a bit. It's good to go now. I can do basic setups, but don't feel comfortable filing nut slots so I let a luthier do it and had him go ahead and set it up since I'd never messed with a set neck before; always been a Strat guy up until I discovered the SG. :)

Cheers!

Same here...played strats for years. Switched to LP's. Now gotta have my SG's. Light weight, easy to play.

Yeah I bought a Cherry Gibson SG Standard back in January.

Just ordered online sight unseen from Musician's Friend.

It is absolutely without a doubt freakin AWESOME!!

It was set up almost perfectly. I just had to lower the bridge on the bass side a little bit and it was 100% perfect. It's not even neck heavy like some SGs.

Straight neck. Low action. No fret buzz. The grain is beautiful. It smells wonderful!!

And of course it sounds like million bucks! Big phat warm tone with plenty of bite.

Here's a good clip of me playing it at a blues jam:

I love SG's, but Gibson really needs to ditch the giant pickguard. How hard could it be to program the CNC machine to make two pickup routes instead of one that's linked together?
