I stumbled across this news story today and thought it was really interesting and worth sharing. Basically this guy (Daniel Barenboim) claims he has a new design for the Grand piano which changes the way they are strung.

We can't talk about guitars all the time can we :)

Meanwhile, on The Piano Page, they are arguing whether one can actually hear a difference between straight-strung and cross-strung pianos once the orchestra kicks in.

My wife's grandmother had a full size grand and a full size grand theater pipe organ in her living room.
The pipes were built into the A frame house.
    Most awesome keyboard experience ever.

The other cool and weird piano I like is a recreation of Da Vinci's 'Organista'. It's basically a 'bowed' piano keyboard.

    "This Guy".......:crazyguy

Do you know who "This guy Daniel Barenboim" is? If not, you should do yourself a favor and do a little research about Maestro Barenboim. And dig a little past Wikipedia.

That's like saying "This guy Jimi Hendrix took a guitar and played it upside down..."

    :aok

Can't help but wonder what a Floyd Rose Concert Grand would be like.

I was working down in Mclean and could not help hearing someone inside just flying across the keys.
I was seriously impressed. Turns out she was a professional concert pianist.
I showed her one of my originals and she was totally stunned I could wing it by ear with zero formal training.
I told her to play a few bars of the piece she was working on.
Then I told her to play it again with the sheet music closed.
She was crippled and said "I can't do that"
I said of course you can you just played it beautifully.
In one short visit I showed her how to free herself of sheet music.
She had never been taught that the sheet music is nothing more than a guide.
To know the piece, you gotta trust your ears.

She now teaches her students both site reading, memorization, and ear training.

    LOL - touche

Sorry brother, as a former Chicagoan, his name was plastered all over the papers, etc. Seriously, he is highly renowned internationally as a conductor ,guest conductor and music director of some very famous orchestras and programs.

No probs - I'm not worried.

I'll admit classical music isn't my strong point these days.

I have a question here. Is the design new or, is it strung the same as Franz Liszt's piano?

Well I noticed they mentioned that Liszt's piano was strung straight in the video but that kind of makes a mockery of the BBC's article title. Damn journalists.... I'm not sure just how similar it is to Liszt's piano in other respects - so maybe there is something else original about it.

    This is so cool.
Taking a drawing by Da Vinci and building a viable instrument. It's fantastic.

    Thanks for posting that.

My take is that it is a modern design using a parallel string layout similar to Liszt's piano. That makes it technically a new design, but it would seem to fall short of actually being an innovation.

And yes, "this guy" knows a few things about pianos. :D
