Congrats! These are great guitars! I've often thought about picking one up as my "Sid McGinnis" style tribute guitar! ;)

Awesome! I got one like this used a few years ago and customized it to look more like a Jem. It had a swapped DiMarzio already in the bridge. I think it's an Air Norton. The other two pickups I put those stupid vinyl bobbin stickers on.

Love it!! Always have been a classic Ibanez RG design fan. Owned several of them.

And yes upgrade the pickups. Stock Ibanez DMZ or whatever they are aren't too bad but regular DiMarzios are the ticket. Match made in heaven. And the color choices they come in make things fun. I was always partial to pink, they'd look sweet against the yellow but then you probably would be required to wear spandex..!

Congrats on a beauty! I have used Ibanez for so many years now but recently sold the last of my J Customs, unfortunately. I have just found that I like a bit of a thicker neck these days as I get older, especially when playing live.

Gravity storms will sound fantastic in a basswood body! Love those pickups!

    Enjoy!

The return of the RG 550! Watch out! I love the Ibanez RG series. I've owned an original '81 Ibanez Destroyer II which I should have kept, but traded away for a '96 Gibson Les Paul Custom. I prefer the RG 570 for the rosewood fingerboard instead of the maple neck. The Edge tremolo, H/S/H pickups ( removed the stock pickups, modded with Dimarzio PAF Pros & HS-2 pickups ), and resonant basswood body was my first good super Strat guitar. The playability of the neck and the way the guitar felt in my hands was a big game changer for me when I first started playing in cover bands. Steve Vai had the right idea in coming out with the RG series along with his Jem guitars.

The only thing I would watch out for is your strap pins. I pulled the strap pins from the basswood body during a show by accident. It's a very soft wood and doesn't hold up well to abuse. I had to get the guitar repaired afterwards.

    Indeed!!!
It’s seen a fair amount of action.
I think it was $540 new when I bought it in ‘88.
It’s cool to hear that Ibanez did the re-issue right.

Congratulations on picking an excellent guitar! Frankly, the RG550 is downright silly good value and renders pretty much all but the very cheapest of Ibanez’ RG offerings obsolete.

Obviously, it was an absolute “must buy” for a sad sod like your’s truly, who simply couldn’t afford one back in the day. Hence, my 80’s approved sister fiddle says “hello”:

I agree with you on the PU’s and ordered new ones for mine within a week of picking it up. I went for all DiMarzios and settled on a The Breed Neck in the bridge, a True Velvet in the middle and a LiquiFire in the neck - a massive improvement!

Enjoy your little slice of 80’s nostalgia - it really is an excellent piece of kit and a great laugh to pull out at jazz jams :bonk

    Cheers

The first thing I looked at was the bridge - original Edge for the win!

You can see the string lock screws sticking out the back; signature of the original and superior Edge! I just swapped the brand new LoPro off my S-5570 for an older Edge last night. Much better now. :)

Those are decals and they are great. I found them online somewhere. I have a video on this guitar up in a couple of weeks where I explained what I changed and with what stuff. I'll try to remember to PM it to you. I think 2 weeks from today is the release date on YouTube.

I picked an "S" model a couple of years ago that I'm going to gift to my god son this summer and want another one. Your post is not helping.

I was thinking about a pink and green color scheme. Yours looks really nice.

I'm going to go with yellow dimarzios I think
