I got my JTV-69 a little over a month ago to use in my cover band. We have a few songs we play that normally have an acoustic guitar in the recordings but I have been using a clean tone for them. I have been pondering a Variax for a while but didn't think I could handle the thin nut width on the JTV-69. I took a chance on a scratch and dent special at Sweetwater. There were no scratches on the guitar other than the plastic on the pickguard. No big deal. I had found a really cool Warmoth birdseye maple neck on Reverb that had pretty much everything I wanted. 1 11/16" nut, '59 roundback profile, jumbo stainless steel frets, compound radius. I only had to install a tusq nut and it was ready to go. The new neck made a huge acoustic difference. This guitar sounds huge acoustically. Unfortunately, the stock magnetic pickups didn't do the guitar any favors. I found a Harmonic Design Z90 here on the Gear Page emporium and ordered a Dimarzio Heavy Blues 2 for the middle and a Dimarzio Satch Track neck with chrome blades for the neck. Everything sounds awesome now. The number 2 position on the switch is total Strat city. A tone of quack. The Z90 is great and the other two pickups sound great as well. Overall, very happy. After plugging it in at the first gig, the other guys in the band said it sounded great and we need to add more songs with acoustic in them. I should mention, I use a Line 6 Helix as well and these two are a gas together. Super flexible! Thumbs up!

Nice mods, IMO. Did you exchange the pickups yourself and if so, any problematic issues?

Yeah, I did. Nothing out of the ordinary. Had to flip phase on the Dimarzios to work with the Z90.

Z-90s are some of my favorite pickups, and I love guitars that you don't need a serial number to identify, so big thumbs up from me!

Holy crap dude, that's amazing! Nice work. Did you just get a Strat-compatible neck, and drill the holes yourself?

Here's what I did with the original neck. Did a little headstock reshaping ;)

I replaced the neck on my Variax just to get a profile that I prefer. I've been thinking about swapping pickups as well. Some people seem to be clipping the wires on the original pickups so they don't have to deal with the circuit board connections. How did you go about this?

That's a nice birdseye neck! :aok

I've got a Warmoth neck (traditional C shape, compound, rosewood fretboard) on order for my JTV-69 that should be shipped to me in the next few weeks.

What's under the white tape on the cymbal? :)
That actually looks pretty respectable. Did it look too small once you put tuners back in?

Fwiw, may I ask how much you paid for that neck?

You might want to go to the Warmoth website and "build" a neck exactly the way you'd like and it will tell you what they'll charge you for that neck (you don't have to place an order in order to find out the price).

I believe there was a word that started with the letter "F" and ended with the letters "in'". I get lots of different types of people in my recording studio so I try to keep it family friendly ;)

The re shaped headstock with tuners actually looked really good, imo.

    250. For such a neck. Grrr.
Really, I'm quite jealous of you folks over there when it comes to prices for music equipment.

I've been thinking about picking up a JTV69S and putting a more stratlike pickguard on it (like the one below), and replacing the neck with my preferred specs. Your thread is pretty good timing for juicing the GAS.
