New Gibson Les Paul Jr. vs. vintage Gibson Melody Maker with Lollar P90.

They can be had for (more or less) the same price.

    Let's hear it.

The big difference is going to be the weight of the body- with a lot of the MMs, the body is so light it's distracting.

I was kind of shocked that nobody else was chiming in...

Have you played the guitars in question? The neck can be different on the MMs as well- I prefer that old Junior feel- both in the shape/size of the neck and the 'heft' in the full size (depth) body- That said, I love having a neck pickup as well...

You and me both. A slew of people not commenting on a TGP thread with "vintage" and "P90" in the subject line is complete travesty. Maybe I struck a nerve and they're all scouring eBay and listings for them now. :crazy

I've never played a vintage MM but have played a LP Jr. I'll try to get my hands on an MM to fondle.

It wasn't all that long ago, they were plentiful and cheap. Not that you would have wanted one back then. You'd have been better off to spend the extra $100 and get a beat up Junior...

Again, the neck feel is different- I don't know if it's a matter of the fretboard being narrower or something- The body is thinner, which takes getting used to. Find one and work it- it always struck me as odd that a student "beginner" guitar would have such a club for a neck...

The MM is too thin and light. "Heft" is definately a characteristic I associate with a LP jr. The two gtrs do not compare. Dunno if I'd be happy with a new LP jr. though.

OK, well I'm going to proceed against the grain here and say an emphatic YES to the Melody Maker - provided it has the following:

    1 - wide nut width (typically pre-1965")
    2 - brazillian rosewood fretboard
3 - no breaks or other issues (original finish?)

What year is the MM? What body style?
Lollar makes a great P90, easily better than the Gibson pickup in the new Jr.
