new mod day! (now with pic)

just finished doing the 4 way mod to my MIM 50s Classic Tele. the previous owner of this guitar had it routed for a humbucker in the neck, and i finally got tired of it after 3 years. so i bought a new Duncan Alnico II tele neck pup and a 4 way switch and it sounds excellent. it's matched with a Jerry Donahue bridge pup and i'm happy to be back to a traditional tele sound in the first 3 positions.

but the 4th position is excellent. it's everything the humbucker (and later, P-90) wanted to be. it's clear, powerful, and responds very well to the tone control. of all the mods that have been done to this guitar over the years, i think this one is the best.

pics to come.

I'm returning my humbuckered tele-clone back to singles. I mod, then years later, I un-mod my mods. It never ends.

I really do suggest the 4 way mod. It's not a true bucker, but it gets close enough while reatining the Tele clarity. That's been the problem I've had with the neck pups in this guitar. No clarity or balance. And the mod is invisible.

Looks great!

Yeah, that choice you made for the neck works great with the Jerry bridge pup.

I am lost as to why more folks are not using this 4 way scheme. I think EVERY Tele pup maker out there owes it to themselves to offer their T neck pickups with the separate, discrete cover ground lead already affixed or at least as an easy to find option, for guys who don't like soldering on expensive pickups.

the Alnico II pickup sounds GREAT. i had one in the "Chibacaster" that Scott Auld traded me, and it made great tones in that Tele. i liked it a LOT!

would have made my life a whole lot easier, that's for sure!

i'm definitely a bit confused by this pickup though. people are always telling me that the tele neck pup isn't good for anything, and that Seymour Duncan can't possibly wind a decent pickup. but this one has IT!
