NGD - $20 Squier off CL

Picked this up this afternoon. Squier Bullet, missing a string saddle and a strap lug. Has a chunk taken out of the body at the bottom, so it will need a patch and paint job. Neck is straight and the frets are in good shape. For $20, I figured what the hell. I already have a set of saddles from another guitar that will probably fit.

Killer deal!!! I own three Squier Bullets. With a few choice mods and a proper set-up, they completely satisfy my Strat needs.

Nice score. That ding on the body looks like no big deal at least in the pic.

I wonder, how does someone loses a string saddle? Wonder if it was the same event that led to the ding in the body and the strap lug falling off?

I was wondering the same thing. A string saddle seems like a hard thing to just lose. No biggie, but it is kind of odd.

Hell just slap a new bridge on there. You would probably be happier with it.

You could remove the neck and throw the body around in the street for a while and whip it with a rusty chain and then you have an instant relic. Sand down a couple of spots all the way to the wood where your right arm would rest and BAM! Instant cool.

these poly-finished Squiers do not relic well.

Ahhhhh... the unsung hero. The bullets are nice guitars. I love the necks. I have a Korean Bullet neck that I'm about to install on a USA Ash body. It's a little chunky which I love. I refinished it in nitro and put a decal on it.

I was ripped off! I found one in similar condition and paid $30. Lol, I turned mine into a lap steel. Lots of fun!

I got one of those "perfect nut"s for free from a buddy. Raised the saddles as high as they would go with a flat radius and tuned it to open g. I dropped some American Standard pickups in that I grabbed for next to nothing as well as am std tuners and a thicker trem block I had sitting around. Mine isn't a bullet, pretty sure it's an Affinity. The Mexican trem block sticks out of the cavity a bit, lol.

Following along with the cheapness of it, I Velcroed the perfect nut to the old one so it doesn't slide around.

Poly? Darn...forget throwing down the street and beating it with a rusty chain but, I bet you could still do some strategic sanding and get some good results. I would love to have a little $20 project to play with!

I wouldn't touch the finish myself, I'd just concentrate on getting it playing well and sounding brilliant.

The looks on people's faces when you plug in a knackered old budget guitar and get an awesome sound would be priceless

Good thought. The finish is last on the list anyway. First thing is to replace the saddles, clean it up, get some fresh strings on it and see how it sounds.

Cool. Gotta love a $20 project guitar. I recently put a set of GFS stainless saddles on a partscaster. Very nice set for $13.

What mods do you suggest? I'm probably going to replace the nut, and possibly the bridge. A rewire job and new pots/caps is also likely to happen.

Since I use the trem a lot, I always put Tusq XL nuts on my Strats. Those cost around $11. I also prefer vintage-style tuners, so I put those on as well. I get ones from Guitar Fetish that cost about $25.

I prefer alnico pickups, so that's another upgrade I do....but it's not a necessity. The stock Bullet pickups are capable of producing some nice tones, as many videos on Youtube will prove.

I've upgraded electronics and wiring on a couple of my Squiers, but never noticed any real improvement, so I don't do that any more.

Oh yeah, one other thing. I used to break strings like crazy, especially the high E and B, but I bought Graph Tech String Saver Classic saddles and got rid of that problem. I highly recommend those if you break strings like I did.

This is a hard tail, so no trem issues to deal with. I just got the output jack soldered up, and she sounds pretty good. I like the neck, very comfortable.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just leave the body as is and just work on the sound and playability. So far, I'm enjoying it.
