I have been wanting a Gustavsson for many years.

I think I first spoke with Matte about it over 6 years ago - back when they were like $6K! But as much as I wanted one I just could not fit one in the budget at that time.

Then we hit the years when I could have gotten one but they were unobtainable. Wildwood quit getting them and Destroy all Guitars started representing them. Remember when Cliff would send out the e-mails about one in stock and the first person to respond would be the one who got it? I never seemed to be in the right place at the right time to get one then. I even missed a couple of great used ones for sale in the last couple of years.

But then things changed. Last year I was speaking with Cliff and he said he could now just order one for me. It would take some time to build, but he said I could get some specific things I wanted and that pushed me over the edge. I put down half the funds and placed my order in May 2011. I was never totally familiar with Johan's specs, so I made a powerpoint of the things I was looking for and giving guidance to the things I like in my other great guitars - neck carve, etc. I also sent several examples of finish and flame on other Gustavsson's I liked having collected photos for reference over the years. Even with all this I did make it clear that I wanted a Gustavsson guitar and that all my info was given for guidance on details where I was not familiar with his specs.

Johan's build time is a lot faster than most, so as we speak my guitar is out for delivery, but I thought I would go ahead and share some build photos with you until it gets here and then maybe later I can take a few shots of it once it actually arrives and I have had a chance to play it. The one photo shows the guitar as it would look if the pickguard was mounted, but I specifically asked that it not be mounted.

More later - after it arrives!

Cliff and Patty at DAG really put in some effort to get this guitar to me today. Next week I am in California all week, so kudos to them for thier extra effort to have a satisfied customer!

    That's gorgeous!!

My gear buddies and I were musing on what guitar we would have if we we only allowed one. The 3 of us said JG.

    First Impressions:
When you first pick it up you can tell by the feel of it that this is a special instrument. Tremendous quality and craftsmanship are evident. Right off the bat here is a list of things I love about this guitar –

    · Playability – a synergy of fit and balance and weight and neck carve and tone – Oh my god! Unbelievable! Everyone has to get one of these guitars!
    · The neck carve and feel – amazing!
    · The tone –
    o Throbaks – very nice!
o Caps and pots – excellent mix for tone and volume control!
    · The fit and finish –The finish quality is top notch and worthy of an exclusive piece.
    · The top –has a deep, 3-D quality that makes it different at every angle. Good movement to the flame. I really like that.
    · I really like the mix of nickel and gold hardware! Turned out very nice. I can see Johan’s usual attention to detail as even the strap button is mixed gold and nickel! This was a last minute add from me and Johan did a great job. Great!
    · The jumbo, stainless steel frets – 5100’s – love them!
    · Weight – very good – Johan made me a great, light guitar!

I know all about honeymoon mode and I know I am in the early stages of enjoying this guitar, but - My recommendation is that you figure out a way to get one of these. I know we have all been through the discussions about the cost vs the value. I can tell you IMHO that the value proposition on these intstruments from Johan is a really great opportunity for you to own an all time amazing instrument.

    My specs:
Solid body - not too heavy please! Ended up being 8.3 lbs.
    Flat sawn mahogany back
6100 stainless steel frets or equivalent
Throbaks 101 SLE Chrome covers, cream surrounds
Custom stoptail, one piece, wraparound bridge
Pickguard included in case, but not mounted
    - no holes drilled in guitar
Cream binding on neck and body
    Mahogany Neck
    10" fretboard radius
Scallop neck cutaway for greater upper fret access
    Dual action truss rod
    Neck width at nut - 1 & 11/16"
Neck width at body - 2.25"
Neck depth at nut - 27/32"
    Crown inlays
    No Buzz Feiten
    25"scale length
Sperzel or Gotoh tuners with Tulip buttons
    Nickel and gold hardware

Johan did a great job of meeting my specs and keeping this true to his standards. My thanks to him.

I also want to thank Matte for discussing these specs with me prior to my order. He is a great resource to us here.

And as for Cliff and Patti @ DAG - well I have already sent them a long thank you note. We all know how great they are to work with.

Yes! A cool feature. Thanks for suggesting it. Upper fret access is very smooth and easy.
