Excellent stuff. Fundamental jazz basics, but really nicely and clearly explained and demo'd. No filler!
Interesting that he's doing it all with a pick - no fingerpicking or hybrid picking (apart from he odd moment towards the end).
Yeah, I thought it was a nice, simple explanation of chord-melody playing. So many get so overwhelmed thinking they need to know thousands of different chord voicings before they can even attempt it.
I really like the approach of 'start with the melody and the roots of the chords and see what you need to add from there.' Bill Frisell was the first guitarist who introduced me to that approach many years ago and I think it's a great way to look at chord-melody playing. I thought it was interesting that Bill and Howard, two players who have very different sounds, start from a similar premise.
