There is a thread that informed us that people are being blocked from accessing TGP from work due to a company that monitors website access for businesses listing TGP as a "sex" website. I am linking to that thread so that readers will understand what happened:

    http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1170199

After spending much of the day trying to get the listing reviewed, I was finally successful in having them change the TGP description from sex site to discussion site. However, I was told that the links in many of the bikini thread posts were to sites that are listed as porn sites, even if the actual photos on TGP were not "porn". If we continue to allow bikini threads or similar, this company's software will again place TGP on the banned list and I was told that it could happen with other companies that provide similar "safe site" services to businesses.

I hate having to add something else to our banned topics list, but my job with TGP is to do my best to keep it running smoothly for members. Given the choice between many members not being able to access TGP from work (I am one of them!) or not allowing bikini threads, the choice is simple. Sorry that we had to make this decision, but at least you know why.

BTW, the only thing we know that I can tell those of you who are unable to access TGP from work is that the company that put us on the banned list will update when they send their next business alert out. I have no idea when that will be.

    Fully support this decision.

    You were given no choice.

    Agreed.

Plus, it isn't as if there is a shortage of sites to access that sort of content if one desires.

My guess is that the random pics and animated gif threads may be next, since some businesses also ban certain humor sites. Lets hope not but who knows - those corporate guys don't like having fun and no productivity on the clock!

I can only imagine the infraction carnage from guys inching toward the line. What about Daisy Dukes and a halter top? What about that Real Women That Ooze Sex Appeal thread?

We need a little clarity here, Brian. And thanks for doing what was needed.

PS: Just so you know, I never once clicked the bikini thread, so I won't miss it.

I hate to mention this because it's one of my favorite threads, but some of the gifs are linked from some kind of shady sites as well. As was mentioned in the original thread, hot linking is the issue and it would be nice if you could just ban that. But I do understand that it is an impossible job for those who would have to police it.

So if I post a pic I found of a Les Paul that happens to reside on a website that somebody else considers a sex site, do we also ban threads about Les Pauls?

    Sorry, I don't get it.

I think the point of most managed content gateways like that (essentially 'content firewalls'), is to keep employees off sites that have little or nothing to do with their jobs.

You can remove all the bikini threads you want, but chances are sites like TGP will end up getting flagged as productivity timekillers and get added anyway at some point (assuming your job isn't music or instrument-related).

Not saying I care one way or the other about the ban, just pointing out the reality of the situation.

Can the vBulletin software be configured to remove links to sites that are flagged as porn? Someone could unknowingly post an image link not knowing its true origin is a website flagged as porn.

Completely understandable resolution. There are plenty of places to go if you want to see that (and who doesn't?), TGP is better without it though.

If those pictures of les pauls consistantly are coming from porn sites then probably yes. But really, What is more closely related to porn sites? Les pauls or bikini girls.
