give something away and see how well people take care of it. let them buy it and they appreciate it more.

    its really simple.

music that does not sell has no value. otoh look at the careers of those who promote sales of their records currently and live as superstars. people value what they do. what a concept!!

another ex: if meeting a chick for the first time do you show up in rags and smelling like **** or do you take the extra steps to look nice and make a great impression? iow, placing value and selling/promoting yourself.

its not the people don't care about guitar. look at how nuno does with rihanna. (artist who sells herself as a superstar). wow she sells out arenas and people buy the music and merchandise. she acts like a million bucks and people show more appreciation for her art.

"Hole-Hearted" is one of the great songs written by any band of that era. And it's played on an acoustic! With no solo! I'd be honored to shake Nuno's hand.

I don't mind the music. I just think the message he sent and the way he presented himself was crap.

If you've got a couple hours to kill, check out some of the old Gear Slutz discussions with Michael Wagner.

Soooooo much first hand info about the recording of those early Extreme albums.

There's even more out there if you feel like doing some digging. :)

    I care.

I love Nuno Bettencourt. It's not just the soloing. I like his riffs, funky rhythm playing, and songwriting. I think Extreme is great as a whole, as well.

I'd probably add Iron Maiden to the list w/ Rush-- while they have alot of us "geezers" in the crowd, there's always a lot of younger folks there too.

It's their loss for not paying attention if you dig it then dig and don't spend so much time proclaiming the doomsday of guitars and solos and shredding. It's alive somewhere in a bedroom or a basement and it will be back when people are tired of gimmicky crap.

I own that album (plus pretty much everything else Nuno has played on) but never heard that tune. Where is it from?

haha i'm not sure. I found it a dozen or so years ago back in the Napster days. I think I actually used Audio Galaxy before it got bought out by Real Player. It's always a song of his that has stuck with me though.

I've totally dredged through those old threads. No surprise: I've got an MP-1 and a Furman PQ-3 in my rack. :)

This has been an entertaining thread. Nuno is still one of my all-time favorite players. I remember reading somewhere back in the day that one his favorite players was Brian May. And, while his style is much more '80s pyrotechnical, I think you can hear that influence in his melodic approach to songs and playing. So much melody there, even when he was unleashing a blitzkrieg of notes, and even in some of the songs that weren't as strong.

Personally, and y'all can call me crazy, the solo from "Song for Love" on Pornograffiti is perhaps my favorite solo of all time by anyone, bar none.

Solo starts at 3:17 or so:

(Someday I'll figure out how to insert a youtube clip, but not today.)

I've got tickets to the Hyannis, MA show in July. It's been a few years.

I have fond memories of taking the time to learn the solo from this tune:

Yeah, it's a solid tune surprised it didn't make the album.
