I was watching something on TV with U2 that was put together during the Rattle and Hum timeframe and it reminded me that Bono "plays" a fair amount of guitar live. I recall he did when I saw them last as well.

What do you all make of front men/women who aren't known for their guitar playing but who pick it up on occasion live and sometimes in the studio. A couple that come to mind are:

Jagger - Keef sneers at him even holding a guitar but I don't know if he has any real chops. I haven't seen or heard it.

Bono - doesn't seem like much of a guitar player - more simple chord work. Guitar seems like a prop

Plant - have seen pictures of him holding an acoustic but never saw or heard him performing

Madonna - yes. This one just makes me go - huh? She doesn't even look comfortable holding it.

who else and what do you all think of their playing abilities or lack thereof.

I think the original guy to think of here was Paul Rogers in his Bad Co days... loved to pose with the LP in his hand and maybe play it during the solos.

Try "Sad Sad Sad" from Steel Wheels - the opening chords are Jagger.

Didn't Mick Jagger play all the rhythm guitar on Sway off of Sticky Fingers?

Nah. Elvis was using a guitar as a prop long before Paul.

Interestingly its been claimed that the guitar solo on the Firm's "Radioactive" is actually Rodgers.

I thought he was a keyboard player until I saw Steve Windwood open for Petty. What a talent. He was just crushing on a blue strat. Some of the best playing I've seen live in awhile. Shockingly good.

Steve Winwood is a pretty remarkable musician on several instruments.

There are quite a few songs that Jagger plays on. I remember a Guitar Player interview back in the late '80s where Richards said that Jagger can pretty much mimic Richards' sound and playing for a lot of Stones songs.

I've often found that, at the pro level, a lot of folks who are extremely talented at one instrument can usually hold their own at more than one. At some point, "musicianship" takes over...

Winwood is an excellent guitar player. Maybe Dave Grohl? At least in the sense of writing hit songs. I'll be interested to see who you guys come up with.

I remember seeing Billy Joel pick up the guitar and play during one of his shows. He should really stick to the piano is all I can say about that.
