Any recommendations for a nice one for the first preamp position in a Vibroking?
GE 5 star blackplate 3 mica 6072A is a good one.
Any of them will work fine. Some top picks are RCA 12AY7s and JAN GE 6072As.
RCA 12AY7s really nail the Fender sound.
Agreed, the JAN GE 6072A's are the bomb... I think they are the same as the GE 5*
black plate triple mica, but I am not 100% on that one.
The RCA's are very nice too, for some reason, if you find the "rare" cleartop they
seem to be even better than the regular RCA 12ay7.
Of course, this is all subjective, but I would try the top picks from the
replies these guys are giving, they are all great choices.
GE 6072 or Gold Star 5751 are very good here.
In fact there is little difference between varities of NOS USA made I have.
Order lots of them but no RCA shows up.
Actually, the later JAN GEs don't have triple micas (like the 5 star version) but I believe the '50s versions do.
Never seen an RCA cleartop 12AY7 that I can remember.
I have a couple of GEs that sound very nice - I like them in Mesa amps, they reduce the gain, improve transparency and take away some of the excessive midrange that they often seem to have... and that's even though I like Mesas, BTW .
I've tried them in the Maverick, DC-5 and Blue Angel - V2 is the best position in all of them (not V1), it's for the dirty channel on the Mav and DC, and the bulk of the gain in the BA. I also like a 12AT7 in the PI in all of them.
I have a cleartop RCA somthing or other, can't recall if it's a 12AY7 though.
(So many tubes, you know how this is better than me...)
thanks very much!
Hey Mike, ever come across many Heintz & Kaufman or IBM branded 6072's? I beleive these were made by GE but m not totally sure...any thoguhts? http://www.lachapellaudio.com/page16.html
