Been gigging a Diamond Memory Lane Jr for years now. It’ll never come off my board. I bought an El Capistan as a second delay flavor, but IMO, it’s just okay. I know the MLJR and the El Cap are different beasts, but I was just hoping to be more inspired by the El Cap and honestly am feeling pretty underwhelmed, especially for the cash.

Any recommendations for a musical, inspiring delay?

Tonal recall RKM imo the best delay ever made! :) yes I'm a fan.

I thought the Empress Tape Delay and Wampler Faux Tape Echo were both better than the El Capistan.

What exactly didn’t you like about El Capistan and what is it missing, in your opinion? I really hate that it doesn’t have presets but it sounds amazing, in my opinion.

I've struggled with the el cap as well. Just swapped it for a helix stomp and first rehearsal had my bandmates asking questions about my effects which they never do.

I do like the El Cap, especially with the spring reverb feature and the tape age. However, it’s not as “pretty” or inspiring as the demos I’ve watched. Part of me thinks it’s because of my affinity for the MLJr, but I wanted a different flavor.

I bought an El Cap a few years ago and was underwhelmed as well. Quickly sold it off and eventually wound up with a Skreddy Echo and love it, even years later. I also have a ML Jr. that I love. They're both tremendous delay pedals.

Maybe a multi-tap delay of some sort. I’m really digging the multi-head mode in the MP Dual Blue. Catalinbread Echorec is similar.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that if you're not bonding with the El Cap, the whole tape delay may just not be your flavor. Because it's probably THE most famous delay around here for a reason - both the sounds and the plethora of options.

That said, it's on my board about a third of the time. I trade it out with a Carbon Copy Deluxe and a Boonar. In fact I was literally just jamming on the Boonar. It's awesome. My wife came in and started playing cajon, heh.

You probably need to figure out what KIND of delay you are looking for. "Inspiring" isn't that helpful. All three above pedals are inspiring to me, but at different times, and I quickly get tired of one and switch it out for another.

the one or main thing the EC "lacks" IME is an analog preamp, and it seems some folks like some kind of preamp to color the tone.

I personally find my straight tone inspiring and don't look just to my El Cap for that.

Catalinbread and others have lotsa preamp flavors...

^ this. Belle Epoch, and Tapex2 is also nice for echoplex type sounds.

I ditched my El Cap and bought an Echosystem (since I need presets).
The tape mode is outstanding. I can create Empress Tape Delay, El Cap, Belle Epoch tape sounds, and a lot more.

I also couldn't bond with the El Cap, but I absolutely love my Volante. Very musical pedal, and it's inspired several new ideas/songs. The El Cap was alright, but to me the Volante sounds quite a bit better, plus it has presets. I also have a Memory Lane 2 and several other delays- the Volante wins for me.
