I had the chance to go to one of the, in lack of better words, much better music stores in the city yesterday and I was in the market for a new delay.
I had my heart set on analog. So I took the 4 delays they had in sight that were just that, Maxon AD9 Pro, Maxon AD999, Carbon Copy, and a Memory Boy.
I didn't feel the mono from the Maxons, and the Carbon Copy, although a nice pedal, also lacked the feeling I was looking for.
So I plugged into the Memory Boy remembering how much I loved the one I played several years ago and boom! There was some of that feeling and richness I was looking for. So I went to the gentleman I was dealing with but he was preoccupied with someone else in the rental department. Waiting and waiting my eyes wandered to the used gear just to pass the time and there it was. A Deluxe Memory Man. Yes, the new versions, but still! I had never even seen or played one before so I needed to try it.
And within the first note, there it was. Like an extension of the sou d and note I was playing, and not just a copy. I had reached a form of delay nirvana that I had never done before. Even with it barely on, the pedal itself brought a lively feel and attack, a type of presence that just wasn't there before.
It had to be mine and as such, I made it mine.
Now I just need a Mobius and a pedal board to fit it all and I'll be set!
Obligatory gear shots now....
