NPD: DMM - NOW I finally get it

I had the chance to go to one of the, in lack of better words, much better music stores in the city yesterday and I was in the market for a new delay.

I had my heart set on analog. So I took the 4 delays they had in sight that were just that, Maxon AD9 Pro, Maxon AD999, Carbon Copy, and a Memory Boy.

I didn't feel the mono from the Maxons, and the Carbon Copy, although a nice pedal, also lacked the feeling I was looking for.

So I plugged into the Memory Boy remembering how much I loved the one I played several years ago and boom! There was some of that feeling and richness I was looking for. So I went to the gentleman I was dealing with but he was preoccupied with someone else in the rental department. Waiting and waiting my eyes wandered to the used gear just to pass the time and there it was. A Deluxe Memory Man. Yes, the new versions, but still! I had never even seen or played one before so I needed to try it.

And within the first note, there it was. Like an extension of the sou d and note I was playing, and not just a copy. I had reached a form of delay nirvana that I had never done before. Even with it barely on, the pedal itself brought a lively feel and attack, a type of presence that just wasn't there before.

It had to be mine and as such, I made it mine.

Now I just need a Mobius and a pedal board to fit it all and I'll be set!

Obligatory gear shots now....

just for the record, that's not a big box DMM, it's the DMMXO.

I'm surprised that they didn't stock them brand new, they're still making them. congrats and enjoy your new pedal! they're a classic with good reason.

And I stated it was the newer versions and never stated it was a big box.

Glad you found your delay nirvana!

My big box DMM is the only pedal I would never part with. Yeah it takes up a stupid amount of real estate, but the DMM has some serious mojo.

Here is something you may have not realized. Turn the delay and blend down to zero - and turn up the level. Used this way the DMM is a very gritty preamp/overdrive pedal. Very warm and great for driving an amp.

Do you get much white noise with the DMM XO when you use humbuckers?

I have an old big box DMM but can't use it with my humbucker guitar because it produces too much noise.. signal is not overly hot as i have Gibson Classic 57 PUPs in them.
With the strat the noise is bearable..

Nice! I had a simliar epiphany the first time I tried one, I never GAS'ed for another analog delay after I got my DMM years ago. I still love it every time I plug it in.

i had a mid 2000s, ext powercord, true bypass, clipping input one. it was incredible. even people that didnt know anything about guitar (or care) would comment how great i sounded playing through it.

i sold it like a fool. i miss that pedal a lot.

I do hear a small amount of white noise but nothing I would consider bad, in fact I find the "white noise" I get to be rather great. It is this subtle nuance on the repeats which I find gives them a certain life... but nothing noisy.

Hmm ok, maybe I should check the DMM XO out. I really miss the DMM delay sound but can't use it with my 335.

Thanks for the info!

I too, love the DMM (XO). The very first time I plugged it in, I recognised the echo on many of the recordings I love. Nothing seems to be able get the same sound (and I've tried with many echo units, including the El Cap).

I get it now.

The coolness of your story is very cool. Congrats. May all your echoes henceforth be bathed in modulated richness.

By the way, is that red pedal below a Vox Satchurator? Because I didn't think TGPers were allowed to have one.

I'm the guy who gave in my TGP badge to pursue better tone.

I feel the same way.

The Deluxe MM is the best sounding guitar delay I've ever owned and it's one of the rare pedals that I love so much, I eventually bought a spare - because I don't want to ever be without one.

I use the older version. Love the way I can use it as a clean boost.

The XO and the Big Box are near identical in sound - certainly small enough to be unnoticable in a band mix. As ever however people will value the big box over the XO as it's discontinued. True bypass and a smaller formfactor make it a lot more usable on smaller pedalboards.

Great comparison here:
