Have an amp, had the tubes that came with it - "fender" tubes. I bought some more once - some EH or whatever was cheap. Worked, sounded OK, but started having some rattling issues of late and felt it was time to retube.

    Bought some JJs.

Wow. Clarity, detail, and just overall better sound. Amazing. Maybe there really is a difference when you buy those NOS Phillips or something :)

But seriously, I see the question come up every once in a while "what's the first (or simplest, or most effective, etc.) upgrade you can make to your amp".

Almost always, the #1 response is put new (i.e. better) tubes in it.

So if you're reading this, and don't already know what new/better tubes can do for your amp, I'd highly recommend diving in.

    Best,
    Steve

Eh actually isn't bad for many tubes.
Fender uses a lot of low end sovtek
Still not bad, but if they're worn down then a new set will definitely make a big difference.
