All this talk of the SD-1 has got me thinking. What OD's use asymmetrical clipping? Most amps are asymmetrical so why the heck don't more OD's do this?

    123 go!

I use slight asymetrical clipping in all of my dirt pedals. Too much and it doesn't sound good though, there is a point at which it will start to sound fake and weird if you have too much asymmetry.

Any OD with a toggle for "Marshall and TS tones" most likely switches between sym and assym.

The MI Audio Classic Distortion has a continuously variable knob for symmetry - very enlightening.

Slap a 10k pot between the + power lead and the circuit, and you can have asymmetric clipping from just about anything, not just dirt boxes. ;)

Amps shouldn't be asymetrical, should they? I mean they are biased to minimize the crossover, and at least with push-pull (AB) they use either matched tubes, or have a way to balance them (on some Fenders at least) but I believe they are fairly symetrical.

In fact I just read some small thing about this by Fuller, who mentions that when he biased amps right, got them symetrical (using the standard method, with a scope) it sounded too cold to him, that he likes the asymmetrical so he biased so it ran hot....lopsided, and also made pedals that were asymetrical.

Match your tubes or valves carefully...
    and do it again..
    and again...
    How many are they????
If they become identical after a while i guess they are not performing asymmetrical. :)

The Boss OD-3. It's really Boss's best kept secret IMHO. It compresses and feels like a tube amp. One caveat - It's a better stand alone OD than a boost to an already OD'd amp.
