Yeah, yeah I know you not supposed to use a THD hotplate but my god I only had the master at 9:00

This is so retarded for it to blow up at only 9:00, its not like I was cranking it all the way. I've ran Super Leads at full up with hotplates with no problems. Is this Rocca pushing 300 watts or something....geeze.

All it does now is fizz when I play it. It better not be a tranny.

Oh I'm sure he'll fix it, I don't doubt that. I'll probably have to give him some $$$ and get scolded like a red headed step child though.

If its a matter of replacing components, I can do that easy as I've had experience in building amps, but if its a tranny then I'm screwed. I believe they're custom Rocca Mercs and I can't just call up Merc and buy that particular tranny.

Uh...not to cause undue worry, but didn't I see something on his website about not using his amps with attenuators or it will void your warranty?

Look here:

http://www.roccaforteamps.com/amp-care-abuse.html

I went there after it blew to check if he does saying anything about attenuators and sure enough. It must go from 0-150 watts at 9:00 on the master

Yes, guitar > Rocca > 16 ohm THD > 16 ohm Cab

Maybe it's a linear-taper pot instead of an audio-taper...

I'm sure thats what it is. I do know that its deafning on the ears real quick thus why I had the hotplate.

No soup for you. You used an attenuator. The tranny maker no likey according to Doug.

Why don't you just plug that Sabre into the Hotplate and see if it croaks, too? :D

(Actually, I was running my Sabre into a Hotplate and a Marshall Power Brake yesterday while testing a few tonal tweaks).

Brent,
I hope you get your amp fixed pronto but to Doug's defense he has been very outspoken about using Attenuators with his amps. He has always said here that he hates them and they don't work with his amps. Not trying to rain on your parade but just thought you should know that Doug is totally against them and has always been consistent with his comments on them.

Thanks Chuck,

I know where Doug stands and he has every right to crack the whip out on me but seriously, I "ASSumed" it was only for when the master is cranked up........obviously not. I'll just tuck my tail between my legs and say Dougie wougie I boke my wocca..... I sorry I a dumb ass and didn't listen :(

Back on topic...the Hotplate generally presents a lower than nominal impedance to the amp when you have the deep and bright switches on, so the failure mode was likely an overcurrent rather than overvoltage (arcing).

Transformers usually die from arcing, tubes usually die from overcurrent, unless it is sustained too long and/or the high-voltage doesn't have proper fusing. I'd crack it open and take a peek at the screen grid resistors, then put in a new set of output tubes and see if it comes back to life. If not, then you probably do need a new tranny.

Send Doug a C-note and a bottle of Crown Royal and he'll overlook the Hotplate use. :)
