So what would be a good DVD or book instructional set to start with?

I was thinking of the Michael Angelo Speed Kills DVD.... any other recommendations?

At some point you should check out the following....

Any Paul Gilbert vids.
Any Shawn Lane Vids.
Any Rusty Cooley vids.
Any Scott Henderson vids.
Any Allan Holdsworth vids.

I mention Shawn Lane because I think he shredded with more soul, I mention Scott Henderson because I think he is one of the best blues/jazz/rock/fusion guys out there right now and Holdsworth because......well, just because.

I also think you should watch Stevie Ray "Live at the El Mocambo" at least once, all the way through.

On youtube I have seen black/white vids of LesPaul the man himself shredding.
Amazing.

You just need to practice a lot. Then, if you happen to have talent, you'll become a good shredder. Those are rare, though.

Also, +1 for the Paul Gilbert DVDs. They are great teaching DVDS and very entertaining as well.
