This past week I've had some major creative juices flowing and recorded a lot. It has been going pretty well, but I now wish to spice it up. Majorly influenced by Cline & Tweedy in Wilco. Sort of a rock soup with elements of country, pop rock, punk, gospel, grunge, and classic rock is what I have brewing.

My current board is Ross Mod Dyna Comp, Flex Drive, DBA Interstellar OD, Catalinbread DLS MKII, Freakshow Rabbit, and a Behringer (yes Behringer) vibrato. My AC15C1 has 'verb and trem that I'm not balking at, so I've got that as well.

I get fairly good Ge-like fuzzy tones from the Interstellar and Rabbit without excessive noise, but am not absolutely ruling fuzz out. No Fuzz Factory's please.

Basically, I'm looking for depth and texture. I know, vague musician terms, right? Let's throw the iconic "warm" in there for good measure ;)

What do you think I should look into? Do I need a nice delay? Ring mod? Bring it.*

*Please bear in mind that I haven't the funds for the likes of a Timeline and so forth. I wish I did.

Ibanez DE7 delay. Super-cheap, great Echo tones, nice oscillation.

WMD Geiger Counter. Weirdness in a box.

Catalinbread Pareidolia. A slightly different take on modulation.

Analog delay fits if you need 'depth, texture and warmth'. Maybe try a univibe, or other leslie sims.

Check out the Iron Ether Frantabit.

I would add a delay first, though. On a budget, maybe the carbon copy. If you can afford it, Strymon El Capistan (they turn up used in the emporium). The El Cap will give you depth, texture and warmth for sure and can be freaky if needed.

I've got a similar yen for the experimental and I just traded for an Eventide Pitchfactor which I am hoping will give me all kinds of interesting sounds (including some that Nels Cline gets from his Whammy) but I think that one's out of your price range.

Ring Thing does some amazing stuff.

If you really want some weird tones in a box, the Mid-Fi Deluxe Pitch Pirate has it all going on, but still very musical.

Pareidolia by Catalinbread

if you wanna drop some serious coin, the Moog Cluster Flux has some pretty awesome & crazy chorus/vibrato/flange options that no other pedal has.

Malekko Wolftone Chaos, two good tones plus drive
Ring Thing, ring and octave up or down
Moogerfooger Ring Modulator, can do lower modulation also
Geiger Counter Civilian, 32 waves to choose and bit crush
Source Audio Soundblox Multiwave Distortion, lower cost, 21 distortions

Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest for OD fuzz Colorsound variation

TC Flashback for lower cost delay, 11 delays plus toneprint downloads

toss a Chicken Salad in there if no univibe yet,
Rotochoir for higher end and more options, can do twin swirl

As far as crazy delays go, I have a few suggestions:

Frequency Central Atomic Clock- Awesome delay with a great filter feature to change the tone of the repeats. Also has an LFO section with controls for speed and depth to add subtle to crazy vibrato to your repeats and a Flash switch to add feedback to your signal and push the delay into self-oscillation.

Mid-Fi Deluxe Pitch Pirate Awesome delay with more crazy pitch bending possibilites. Also has depth and speed controls along with knob for controlling the wave form of the LFO. You can get some crazy broken tape machine sounds out of this one.

DMB Lunar Echo Beautiful analog delay with a 'Wrecked' mode to make crazy noises that I really can't describe, very spacey.

Snazzy FX Wow and Flutter Another broken tape delay with a little different approach. It doesn't use an LFO for modulation so the broken tape sounds and vibrato react differently to different picking dynamics, very weird and really unique.

I have played all of these besides the Snazzy FX Wow And Flutter, but one should be here tomorrow (got a killer deal on one!). Here are reviews of the Atomic Clock and Lunar Echo with some soundclips:

Thanks. I've been watching demo's as I read through this thread. I'm getting really curious about Mid-Fi's stuff and The Ring Thing. Come to think of it, I may try to find a Malekko LoFi 616. Had one before and it gave me both analog delay and ring-mod type sounds. Versatility and pedalboard real estate are important considerations if I haven't mentioned it before.

I'm sure I'll eventually end up going to a bigger board down the road.
