where im from stick in the mud means youre a boring, or uptight person.
kind of like a party pooper.

"lets ask joe if he wants to go skinny dipping!"

"nah, that stick in the mud will probably say its too cold out"

and its kill two birds with 1 stone...meaning should be obvious
(literally to conserve ammo, figuratively to accomplish 2 different tasks
    with one action)

"I broke up with linda, now I dont have to worry about what to get her for christmas,
I killed two birds with that stone"

    off the hook

the 'microphone' component of a telephone receiver is not on its rest, thus preventing incoming calls.

I heard on the radio that "blowing smoke up your a**" refers to an actual medical procedure used to resuscitate people who had drown.

    The moral is:

It doesn't matter how bad the situation is; it can always get worse.

When a family member says "you can pick your friends, you can't pick your family"

It actually means - "you may not like us much, but we ain't all that crazy about you either"

"To be perfectly honest with you..."

Means either they are about to lie to you or, they always lie to you and this time they are actually going to be honest.
